A new round of global power battery capacity expansion has released huge market demand for lithium battery materials and equipment, and domestic lithium battery equipment has ushered in new development opportunities and challenges.


After 10 years of cultivation, China has made great breakthroughs in the field of lithium battery materials and equipment, realized the localization of key materials and core equipment, and even exported them into the international supply chain in batches.


On December 17, the 2020 High-tech Lithium Battery & Electric Vehicle Annual Meeting continued in Shenzhen Airport Hyatt Hotel. Nearly 1,000 corporate executives gathered in the power battery industry chain to discuss the new industry blueprint for the next ten years.


In the smart manufacturing upgrade session titled by Raycus Laser, Dr. Dapeng Yan, vice chairman and chief engineer of Raycus Laser, gave a keynote speech on "The Status and Future of Domestic Fiber Lasers".


Fiber lasers are essential for many different production and manufacturing processes in the new energy industry, including the manufacture of electric drive systems for batteries and motors. For example, welding, cleaning, cutting, marking, etc., are achieved using fiber lasers with power ranging from tens of watts to several kilowatts.


In the field of fiber lasers, due to China's late start and weak technology, the domestic high-end fiber laser market is mainly monopolized by imported brands, making the cost of laser equipment of Chinese lithium battery companies persistently high for a long time.


However, with the continuous improvement of the performance of domestic lasers and the need for large-scale manufacturing of power batteries to reduce costs, the opportunity for domestic fiber lasers to replace imports has arrived.


Dr. Yan Dapeng said that in recent years, the domestic market share of domestic fiber lasers has continued to increase, with many independent innovation highlights, such as semiconductor laser chips, output fibers, etc., but the manufacturing and testing equipment of some key components still rely on imports.


At present, Raycus Laser has achieved full coverage of pulsed fiber lasers from 20W to 2000W; 300W to 30000W continuous fiber lasers; 75W to 450W quasi continuous fiber lasers; 50W to 8000W fiber output semiconductor lasers and other products, which are widely used in marking,cutting , welding, additive manufacturing and other fields.


Regarding the future of domestic fiber lasers, Dr. Yan Dapeng believes that the country is advocating and policy-supporting the national production of laser manufacturing and additive manufacturing, and domestic fiber lasers will usher in an opportunity to replace imports on a large scale in the field of power batteries.


Under such circumstances, Raycus has increased its R&D investment in new products for product upgrades, and introduced new products such as blue fiber output semiconductor lasers and high-power fiber lasers RFL-ABP with adjustable beam modes.

Dr. Yan Dapeng believes that the substantial expansion of global power battery production capacity provides a good development opportunity for domestic lithium battery equipment, but at present, China’s smart manufacturing still faces insufficient industrial cooperation between new energy companies and equipment companies, and there is still room for improvement in key manufacturing process design. The low consistency of processing precision and surface treatment, the lack of standardization of new energy manufacturing processes, the core technology of new energy equipment still relies on imports, the huge investment in equipment, and the pressing pressure to reduce costs.
